On Sunday, June 4, 2023, a private Cessna Citation jet owned by John Rumpel’s company, Encore Motors, crashed in Virginia after breaching restricted airspace over Washington, D.C. The plane was carrying Rumpel’s daughter Adina Azarian, 49, his 2-year-old granddaughter Aria, and their nanny, along with the pilot, Jeff Hefner. They were returning to their home in East Hampton, New York after visiting Rumpel and his wife Barbara in North Carolina.
The plane lost contact with air traffic control and turned around, heading back towards Washington. Two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled to intercept the unresponsive aircraft, but did not shoot it down. The plane then crashed into the George Washington National Forest in Virginia at a high rate of descent, around 20,000 feet per minute, killing all four on board.
This tragedy comes 29 years after Rumpel’s other daughter, Victoria, died in a scuba diving accident in 1994 at age 19. The Rumpels later named an assisted living facility they own in Florida, Victoria Landing, in her memory.
